## High-Intensity Daily Personal Activities: What Care Does That Include?

What this care actually includes, who provides it, and how safety is managed.

If you've come across the term High-Intensity Daily Personal Activities (HIDPA) under the NDIS, you may have paused and thought: this sounds important, but what does it actually mean day to day?

You're not alone. The wording sounds technical, even intimidating. In plain terms, HIDPA covers support for complex medical needs — the kind of care that has to be done correctly to keep someone safe, and that goes well beyond everyday personal care tasks like showering or dressing.

### What Are High-Intensity Daily Personal Activities?

The NDIS uses this term for support involving specialised, high-risk, or medically complex care. These aren't routine personal care tasks. They're activities that, if done incorrectly, could put someone's health at serious risk.

The purpose is straightforward: keep the person safe and stable, while still allowing them to live at home, attend school or work, and stay part of their community — not sitting in a hospital bed for something that can be safely managed day to day.

### What Care Does HIDPA Include?

- **Complex bowel care** — managing constipation, enemas, manual evacuation, or a bowel program designed by a health professional.

- **Enteral feeding (tube feeding)** — providing nutrition, hydration, or medication through a PEG tube (gastrostomy) or NG tube (nasogastric).

- **Tracheostomy care** — cleaning, suctioning, and monitoring to keep airways open and prevent blockages.

- **Ventilation support** — operating and monitoring ventilators, responding to alarms.

- **Subcutaneous injections** — administering medication such as insulin safely, at the correct time and dose.

- **Catheter and stoma care** — maintaining urinary catheters, stoma sites, and bags to prevent infection.

- **Complex wound care** — dressing chronic wounds, monitoring healing, reducing risk of infection or hospital readmission.

- **Seizure management** — recognising seizure activity, delivering emergency medication where required.

In short, HIDPA covers the medical tasks that allow someone to live safely outside of a hospital setting.

### What Support Actually Involves

- **Observation and monitoring** — noticing small changes before they become serious problems

- **Emergency preparedness** — being ready to act immediately if something goes wrong

- **Working with health professionals** — following care plans, keeping families updated, involving doctors when needed

- **Emotional support** — because clinical care can feel overwhelming, and reassurance matters as much as the medical task itself

### Who Provides HIDPA Care?

Not every support worker is able to provide HIDPA, and that's intentional. This care requires specific training and competency checks before anyone delivers it. You should expect:

- Support workers assessed specifically for competency in high-intensity tasks

- Registered and Enrolled Nurses (RNs/ENs) involved in oversight, care planning, and complex interventions

- Ongoing training and refreshers, so skills stay current rather than lapsing

- Clear escalation protocols, so staff know exactly when to involve medical professionals or emergency services

If a provider can't answer specifically how their staff are trained and assessed for this kind of care, that's worth asking about directly before support begins.

### Safety Standards

Safety in HIDPA isn't just about avoiding mistakes. It's about building trust and stability into daily care. That includes emergency management training (CPR, first aid, escalation procedures), regular audits and risk assessments, and transparent communication so families always know what's happening and why.

### What This Looks Like Day to Day

Every HIDPA arrangement is built around the individual, so no two look identical — but families and participants can generally expect consistency (familiar support workers who know the person's routines), dignity (tasks carried out with respect and privacy, not treated as purely clinical procedures), professionalism under pressure, openness about health changes or incidents, and relief for families knowing the medical responsibility isn't sitting entirely on their shoulders.

### Why It Matters

High-Intensity Daily Personal Activities can sound like a technical NDIS category. In practice, it's about something much simpler: life, safety, and dignity. For families, it means being able to step back from constant medical vigilance, knowing their loved one is genuinely safe. For participants, it means the chance to live more freely, even with complex medical needs.

If HIDPA support sounds like it might sit alongside accommodation needs, see how it works together with [Supported Independent Living](supported-independent-living.html) or [Individualised Living Options](individualised-living-options.html). Annzac Care is in the early stages of building out documented outcomes for this service. As we work with participants and families on high-intensity support, and with appropriate consent, we'll add real examples of what this has meant for the people we support.
