What It Actually Involves

### Finding the conditions under which someone can actually take part

Community participation isn't about filling a calendar with activities. It's about finding the specific conditions — timing, environment, pacing, people — under which someone can actually take part, rather than just be present.

#### Predictable structure

The same routine, entry point, and pacing, so energy goes toward the activity rather than managing the unfamiliar.

#### Sensory-aware environments

Noise, lighting, and crowd levels considered in advance, not worked around after the fact.

#### Communication on their terms

Verbal, non-verbal, or somewhere in between, without pressure to perform a particular kind of interaction.

#### Consistency of support worker

Familiarity matters here more than almost anywhere else in disability support.

#### Genuine inclusion

Not supervision — the goal is participation, not simply attendance with someone watching on.

#### Sustainable engagement

Support that helps someone build social connection in a way that works for them, long-term.

Community participation funding under the NDIS exists to support exactly this kind of engagement — helping participants build social connection, pursue interests, and take part in community life in a way that's sustainable for them.
